What makes a leader?

This post is by my daughter Aliza. She delivered it as a speech for a leadership position for year six in November 2023. I hope that you enjoy the power and passion that she lives on a daily basis. Thank you Aliza for allowing me to share.

Leader. Right now you're probably thinking of someone who sits on the stage and wears a badge. But to me it could be any one of you. And the only way that you can be the best person you possibly can is if you have a great role model, someone who is like a compass, their job is to guide. And the only working compass around here is me, Aliza Skeers.

During primary, all my teachers have commented on my good behaviour. My first recognised job was a library monitor. I would always turn up on the my day and help out if they needed extra help. That is the only job I had a badge for, but little things are always the most important things.

Let's say I can't promise you much, but a smile, wave, laugh and joke is all I can do. Anyways a school feeling good is all that matters. A school only looking good will never be a place anyone would like to be at.

A motto in my house is "life is your fulltime job". But what does that really mean? It means that anything you do has to be done with care. Say just the tiniest thing like placing a cup down. You could do it with care or aggression. When you do it with care you are with yourself and that is a moment where you have to be on and not think about other stuff. Wait, how many points did I score in soccer this morning... Hold up, I have to be on right now or you would be snoozing.

I have been practising that for years now and it has not only made me respectful, but I now know how to listen to my friends, teachers and peers better. I am now the most fun person I have ever been.

A leader is kind. A leader is fun. A leader is anyone of you.

You could be a leader and if you vote me, Aliza Skeers, I will be your guiding compass.
